The
shakti energy (also called prana or qi) is the holy spirit; the anima,
nurturing, or divine feminine aspect which represents the creative life
force that is required to awaken the soul to its true potential. In
China, qi is pronounced as "chi," while in Japan, qi is pronounced as
"ki," and in ancient Egypt, this life force of empowerment was known as
"ka."
In
Egyptian hieroglyphs, the "k" sound was illustrated by the snake. Even
the word "snake" contains both the "s" and "k" sounds--just as in the
words sacred, sanctity, and sacrament. Because shakti energy coils
itself like a snake poising before it awakens, it can also be called
"the serpent fire." The snake or serpent symbol was revered in all
ancient cultures because the snake has the unique ability to shed its
skin and rejuvenate itself. As a result, the snake is an archetype of
transformation.
The
root chakra is where the soul or higher Self slumbers. It represents
our evolutionary stage of survival. For the last 5,000 years, survival
is what most of humanity has been experiencing. Most of the energy that
the average person spends from day to day is for "making ends meet." As
the saying goes, "I owe, I owe, so off to work I go." Like in the movie
The Matrix, Morpheus reveals to Neo, "The Matrix is everywhere. It is
all around us. Even now in this very room. You can see it when you look
out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it
when you go to work, when you go to church, when you pay your taxes. It
is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the
truth." This description of "the matrix" articulates the survival role
of the root chakra.
The
root chakra is illustrated by four red petals exemplifying the four
experiences of joy, pleasure, passion, and bliss, or alternatively;
psycho-spiritual longing, psycho-sensual longing, physical longing, and
spiritual liberation. It acts as a portal to the earthly, material, or
physical realm. This is where we become victims to our id such as its
instinctual pleasures, impulses, lust, passions, and primal urges. The
root chakra is associated with our basic needs like food, clothing,
shelter, and security.
When
the root chakra is in need of healing, the native may end up overdoing
the sensual pleasures such as food, drink, sex, or drugs. Material
excesses, such as in hedonism are also associated with the root chakra.
It is where the ego reigns supreme. When the root chakra is healed,
however, any fears of insecurity, survival, and "not having enough"
dissolve, and the evolutionary journey of the soul treks upward toward
the sacral center.
